Challenges Experienced
It was my first time creating pixel art, and creating all the assets took a very long time. I ended up mistakenly sizing my assets wrong, causing different pixel-sized assets in the final game. I unfortunately didn’t have enough time to redo them.
It was my first time using Unity, so I had to learn where things were in the UI and how it worked, which slowed down the process of making my game.
Overview
Overall, this game was a success. I had so much fun making this game, and I improved my proficiency in pixel art, sprite animation, and level design. I also became better at the game development process from concept to completion by implementing player feedback and iterating on my designs. Play testers were impressed with the visuals, creative gameplay elements, and the cohesiveness between story, art style, and gameplay.
Role
Game Artist and Level Designer: Solo Project
Tools
Game made in Unity
Assets made in Procreate and Photoshop
Process
I began the project by designing the first level as a basic white box, which helped me lay out the essential structure. Next, I focused on character design and created an inspiration board to set the tone for the game's aesthetic and environment. I then developed pixel animations for Phoebe's character, including run and idle movements, before moving on to playtesting the first level.
Once level 1 was ready, I started on the second level’s white box and crafted the environment assets, ensuring both levels had a consistent look and feel. After finishing the visual elements, I playtested level 2. The final step involved creating the last level of the game, followed by adding audio elements to complete the immersive experience.
This is a short, multi-level 2D-pixel platformer game I made for my college class called Games and Interactivity. It’s about a girl named Phoebe and her plushie lamb, Cream, trapped in a dreamy world, and how she finds her way back home.
